Dr. Hans P. A. Van Dongen is a Professor with tenure in the Department of Translational
Medicine and Physiology at Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane. Dr. Van
Dongen is known for his research on human sleep, sleep deprivation, shift work, cognitive
performance, fatigue risk management, and sleep-related health. His research includes
laboratory, field, and simulator studies, as well as mathematical modeling of sleep and
performance. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, and is a named inventor on two
patents. He has been awarded funding by the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Congressionally
Directed Medical Research Programs, National Institutes of Health, NASA, Federal Aviation
Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and multiple foundations and
industry partners. Dr. Van Dongen mentors trainees in all stages of career development, and
more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior
faculty have been trained in his laboratory. He is a core faculty member and former director
(2014–2024) of Washington State University’s Sleep and Performance Research Center; a
Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science; and an elected member of the Washington
State Academy of Sciences.
